COUNTRY basketball’s next generation earned a place in the BVC elite pathway this week following the announcement of the 2018 BVC Jamboree invitees on Wednesday.

Our best and brightest under-12 athletes have been selected to participate in the 2017 BVC Jamboree, held in Echuca this September.

There will be 240 athletes, 18 young referees, 24 coaches and 24 team staff invited to attend the prestigious event.

At last weekend’s BVC Under-12 Skills Day – held at nine regional centres across Victoria – the top 240 were selected from nearly 1000 participants to represent their associations and domestic clubs at the Jamboree.

120 male and 120 female U12 athletes will represent a Victoria Country Development team in the Jamboree at Echuca. The Jamboree event is about developing the athlete’s skills and also creating an enjoyable basketball experience.

“BVC have worked over the last few years to ensure that the opportunities to attend a Jamboree event have been increased.” BVC’s Participation Coordinator Craig Hockley stated. “As local association increase participation numbers and BVC accept more participants at Skills Days, we need to provide good opportunities for athletes selected.”

As well as 240 athletes, BVC will be represented by 18 young referees, 24 coaches and 24 team staff.

“The Jamboree concept first commenced in Europe and BVC are proud to be able to continue the development of this long established regional Victorian event,” BVC General Manager David Huxtable said.

Almost 1000 children attended the Basketball Victoria Country (BVC) U12 Skills Days held at nine regional centres over the last weekend.

At each centre athletes were instructed by BVC regional head coaches and a band of volunteer network coaches.

“An important part of the BVC Skills Days is coach development and around 133 coaches were on the courts over the weekend,” Hockley said. “This is an extremely important part of our process and supports the record participation numbers at local associations.”

“This year 49 of the coaches active on the floor were female and it is important that we have female coaches going through our pathway.”

The start of the BVC pathway also commences at the Skills Days, with the difficult selection task made even harder by the skill level of the athletes attending.

“Each year it is evident that local associations are working at developing their athletes,” Hockey said. “It is a challenge for our coaches to select just 240 for the BVC Echuca Jamboree.”

BVC congratulates and recognises all athletes who attended the Skills Days across Regional Victoria and the local associations who have assisted in providing an access to play basketball locally.
