Pakenham Warriors Parent Information

Welcome to the Pakenham & District Basketball Association’s Representative Branch, the Pakenham Warriors. Our club is involved in both the junior Basketball Victoria representative competition, known as the Melbourne United Victorian Junior Basketball League (MU VJBL), and senior semi-professional Basketball Victoria competition, known as the Big V. Our junior program fields teams in both boys and girls, from U12 to U21’s, with teams competing at the highest level (Victorian Championship) in all age groups in 2018. We have also been developing pathways for our juniors to continue to play right through to adulthood, with the Warriors Big V Youth men and women, and Warriors Senior Big V men and women.

Today your child participated in their first Pakenham Warriors 2018/19 tryout for representative selection. It is anticipated that they will endeavour to attend the tryouts being held on Friday, 12th October and Sunday 14th October as well. Please note that players who attend Try-outs are not guaranteed a position on a team. Families should be prepared for this prior to attending Try-outs. Selection into a team is at the discretion of the coach, with input from the age group Head Coach and Director of Coaching. Players are selected on merit and with the best interests of creating a competitive team.

The team selections and notifications are anticipated being made on Wednesday 17th October, for VJBL and Country squads. For those that are successful, MUVJBL training commences on Sunday 21st October for all U12s – U18s. Training sessions run for an hour and a half; 8:30am to 10am, 10am to 11:30am or 11:30am to 1pm. You will be notified of your specific training time and court once teams are finalised.

If your child is offered a position on a 2019 Pakenham Warriors team, you will be required to pay fees in person. Payments can be made via cash or card during the initial training sessions in October 2018, either in full or via instalments. The initial payment is due within 2 weeks of teams being announced. Actual dates and details will be provided following Try outs. Players will not be confirmed on a team until payment has been made. If payment is not made within the required time frame, the Club reserves the right to offer the position to another player.

REFUNDS

Under no circumstances will a player be offered a refund, except as a result of:

  • Injury

Should a player have a season ending injury, backed up by doctors’ written proof, a player may be eligible for a partial refund of their season fee, up until the halfway point of the season. In this case you are to notify the VJBL coordinator to discuss.

  • Part Season

If a player is cut from the team prior to the end of grading phase 1, a partial refund of fees to that date may be applicable. Please contact the VJBL Coordinator to discuss. NOTE: Bad behaviour that leads to discipline or dismissal will NOT be considered as a reason for refund eligibility.

Likewise, if a player comes into a team under any special circumstances, a part fee payment may be applicable. Contact the VJBL coordinator to discuss.

UNIFORMS

The basic uniform cost is $132.00 (inc gst) and includes:

  • Warriors Home playing singlet
  • Warriors Away playing singlet

(See the Players Uniform Policy document for further information regarding the playing uniform).

There are a range of optional items which are also available for you to purchase, such as Warriors Hoodies, Warriors Bags, Training Shorts and Warm Up Tops (with players name/nickname on them) etc.

Samples of all Uniform items (and other merchandise), in a range of sizes, will be set up for you to come and try on during our initial training sessions. Each team will have an allotted time slot for this to occur. You will be given further information on this following selection.

TRAINING

All Warriors players are required to attend compulsory Sunday training sessions. The times of these training sessions are set by the Club. Most teams will also have a second midweek training session. Players are expected to commit to these training times. We do not work around an individual player’s other commitments, including other sports, when scheduling training. Players should be ready to begin when their session starts, and come prepared with a full water bottle and basketball.

PARENT COMMITMENT

Prior to accepting a position on a team, it is important for parents/carers to realise the commitment that they too are making. Playing representative basketball entails approximately 9 months of Friday night games and Sunday morning trainings. It means potentially driving to courts anywhere from Pakenham to Shepparton, Mornington or Geelong, for games starting at 6:40pm (usually younger age groups) to 9:40pm (older age groups). It also means that you will be rostered to score every four weeks or so.

So why do it? We have found that:

  • It gives you an opportunity to share your child’s passion.
  • Your teen doesn’t want to let the team down by partying on Friday/Saturday nights.
  • You can really talk to your child on the trips to and from games.
  • It shows your child that you value them and a healthy, active lifestyle.
  • You meet and make many friends within our club and within the competition.
  • You can get involved in supporting our club by volunteering for our Committee, on a sub-committees, as a Team Manager or helping out with game day set-up/pack-up.
  • You can cheer on and encourage your child and their team mates and role-model good sportsmanship.
  • You get to be a part of your child’s celebrations and empathise in their commiserations and frustrations.
  • Rep can lead to additional opportunities to play at the highest level.
  • You get school holidays off!
