If the issue requires medical attention, please call 000 for emergency services.
If your son/daughter has had an injury while playing, please make sure that you notify the stadium that it occurred at as quickly as possible.
They will ask you to fill in an incident report.
You may also need to contact Basketball Victoria for further assistance.
Please be aware that any injury requiring some form of medical attention MUST be reported to the venue where the injury occurred. It is also advisable to allow venue medical staff to assess any injury prior to a decision being made as to whether or not to transport the child for further medical attention.
The rationale behind this is two fold.
- Without having an incident reported to venue management, there may well be no recourse to insurance claims etc etc
- Most venues have trained medical staff who can advise as to whether or not it is “safe” to move the injured child.
Whilst on the subject of player injury, and to ensure parents fully understand what happens on court if a player is deemed to have been injured, below is a summary of the official rules regarding player injury. (this should help both Coaches and Parents understand why the referee may not stop the game immediately following a suspected injury)
Art. 5 Players: Injury
5.1 In the event of injury to a player(s), the officials may stop the game.
5.2 If the ball is live when an injury occurs, the official shall not blow his whistle until the team in control of the ball has shot for a field goal, lost control of the ball, withheld the ball from play or the ball has become dead. If it is necessary to protect an injured player, the officials may stop the game immediately.
